Step 1

Register for SLO Days and WOW

Year 1 Scholars

SLO Days (Summer Orientation) and Week of Welcome (Fall Orientation) are exciting opportunities to prepare for your journey at Cal Poly!

Cal Poly Scholars are highly encouraged to attend one of the following SLO Days sessions:
  • July 27-28, 2020
  • July 30-31, 2020
  • August 16-17, 2020 (optional: Mustang Express, August 15, 2020)*
  • September 11-12, 2020**
The registration system is updated every Monday, so we recommend waiting until the Tuesday following your award acceptance to attempt to register. If you see more options than the four sessions listed above, the system has not yet been updated to reflect that you are a Cal Poly Scholar.

*This option tends to fill up quickly! Please note: your supporter(s) aren't able to ride with you on the Mustang Express.

**Scholars who are also participating in the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) should register for this session; it should be the only option available when you register.

If you are unable to attend one of the four SLO Days sessions listed above, please work directly with the Orientation team to register for an alternate session by submitting an Orientation Request Form.

As a Cal Poly Scholar, fees related to SLO Days and WOW are covered.
  • If you are asked to pay, give the system a few more days of processing time to waive your fees and try again the following Tuesday.
  • If you’ve already paid, please work directly with the Orientation team to request a refund by submitting an Orientation Request Form.
  • Orientation fees will be applied to the accounts of students who decline or are no longer eligible for the Cal Poly Scholars financial award. This can be processed by accessing the "Orientation Events" tab in your MyCalPoly Portal.
  • For SLO Days, the cost of attendance for supporters, additional meals, and merchandise are not covered as part of your Cal Poly Scholars award.
  • For WOW, plan to bring $25 in cash for use while exploring campus and beyond!

New Transfer Scholars

SLO Days (Summer Orientation) and Week of Welcome (Fall Orientation) are exciting opportunities to prepare for your journey at Cal Poly!

SLO Days session dates for incoming transfer students are determined by major, and you are highly encouraged to attend the Cal Poly Scholars breakout session:
  • August 26, 2020
  • August 27, 2020
The registration system is updated every Monday, so we recommend waiting until the Tuesday following your award acceptance to attempt to register.

If you are unable to attend either of the SLO Days sessions listed above, please work directly with the Orientation team to request an exemption by submitting an Orientation Request Form.

Step 2

  Complete the University Housing application

Year 1 Scholars (required)

The 2020-21 University Housing application for new students opens on March 18. You can edit your application and add roommates anytime through June 1 (extended from May 7).
  • CLICK HERE to learn more about the application process.
  • CLICK HERE to learn more about housing fees.
Notes for incoming Cal Poly Scholars:
  • At Cal Poly, students request to live in a Residential Learning Community -- not a specific building. As a Cal Poly Scholar, you’ll automatically be placed in the Year 1 Scholars Community.
  • You can request a roommate who is not a Scholar! As long as you both request each other as roommates, they’ll join you in the Year 1 Scholars Community (even if they’ve requested another community). If they prefer to live in another community, they should email housing@calpoly.edu prior to June 15. In this case, you would still remain in the Year 1 Scholars Community.
  • Looking for a roommate? Consider joining a Facebook group with other incoming Cal Poly students!
  • If you are participating in the Education Opportunity Program (EOP), you are likely to be placed into the EOP Community, as space allows. All Year 2 Scholars, including those who are also participating in EOP, are expected to reside in the Year 2+ Scholars Community.
  • If all of your fall 2020 classes are online and you choose to defer your housing for fall quarter, your participation in the Scholars program will not be impacted. We will happily respect whatever choice you decide and you must have the deferral approved by University Housing for it to not impact your program participation. Please review the information on the University Housing website and follow their explicit instructions for requesting a deferral by June 1, 2020. We look forward to welcoming you to the Cal Poly Scholars residential learning community in Winter 2021!
  • Limited exemptions are granted for the Cal Poly Scholars requirement to live on-campus for two years. To inquire about a possible exemption, please email cpscholars@calpoly.edu.

New Transfer Scholars (optional)

Incoming transfer students in the Cal Poly Scholars program are not required to live on campus.

The transfer housing application is closed, as all spaces are filled for Fall 2020. You can add your name to the waitlist in your Housing Portal.
  • CLICK HERE to learn more about the application process.
  • CLICK HERE to learn more about housing fees.
Step 3

Complete the Cal Poly Scholars Agreement

Year 1 Scholars

Each academic year, Cal Poly Scholars are asked to review and accept or decline an agreement that outlines program benefits, requirements, and expectations specific to your cohort and year in the program.

Step 4

Use your tech credit at the University Store

As a Cal Poly Scholar, an exciting part of your financial aid package is a one-time $900 technology credit at Cal Poly’s University Store.

  • The credit is only applicable toward the purchase of a laptop or tablet sold through the University Store. Warranty packages and cases for the purchased devices may also be purchased with the tech credit.
  • The credit is good during the academic year you receive it, beginning once you've checked in for Week of Welcome (WOW) and valid until the final day of spring quarter.
  • The credit cannot be applied to an online purchase; however, you can view the products online to determine what option is best for you. We also encourage you to talk with the University Store tech staff to discuss which product will support your academic needs.
  • If the cost of the device is greater than $900, you will be responsible for paying the difference before the device is ordered. The difference must be paid in person, not online or over the phone, so we encourage you to order and pay for your device while on campus for SLO Days.
  • Once paid for, your device should be available to pick up from the University Store once you move in and check in for WOW in September.
  • If you do not order and pay for your device before September, the University Store cannot guarantee the specific brand or type of computer you want will be in stock upon your arrival to campus. However, the tech staff at the University Store will be happy to help you order the device and have it delivered shortly after the start of the quarter.
Step 5

Join us at the Welcome Reception!

We can’t wait to kick-off fall quarter with you and your fellow Scholars! Towards the end of summer, keep an eye out for an invitation to the Cal Poly Scholars Welcome Reception, which takes place early fall quarter. This fun event will connect you with new and returning Scholars as well as staff members across Cal Poly dedicated to supporting your success at Cal Poly and beyond.
