Next Steps for New Scholars 2020-21

Congratulations on your acceptance to Cal Poly!

Below are the next steps for incoming students after accepting the Cal Poly Scholars financial award.

Questions? Email cpscholars@calpoly.edu or contact one of our Program Coordinators!

As the University continues to make decisions regarding the format of fall quarter, we'll keep you informed of any updates relevant to the Cal Poly Scholars program. For the latest information regarding Cal Poly's response to COVID-19, please visit coronavirus.calpoly.edu.

Step 1

Attend our SLO Days breakout session

Year 1 Scholars

Missed the Cal Poly Scholars breakout during SLO Days? No worries, you can request a recording by emailing us at cpscholars@calpoly.edu.

REMINDER: As a Cal Poly Scholar, fees related to SLO Days and WOW are covered.
  • If you’ve already paid, please work directly with the Orientation team to request a refund by submitting an Orientation Request Form.
  • Orientation fees will be applied to the accounts of students who decline or are no longer eligible for the Cal Poly Scholars financial award. This can be processed by accessing the "Orientation Events" tab in your MyCalPoly Portal.
  • For SLO Days, the cost of attendance for supporters, additional meals, and merchandise are not covered as part of your Cal Poly Scholars award.
  • For WOW, plan to bring $25 in cash for use while exploring campus and beyond!

All dates are accurate but may be subject to change based on recommendations from Public Health related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

New Transfer Scholars

Following your SLO Days session on August 26th or 27th, you and your supporter(s) are highly encouraged to attend the Cal Poly Scholars breakout outlined below. We’ll provide an overview of the program, discuss using your $900 technology credit, hear from current Scholars about their transfer experience, and create opportunities for you to connect with other Scholars!

If you are unable to join the Cal Poly Scholars breakout, please email Cecilia Martinez, Program Coordinator, at cmarti74@calpoly.edu to discuss next steps.

Step 2

  Finalize your University Housing application

Year 1 Scholars (required)

If you've been approved by University Housing to defer your fall quarter housing, your participation in the Scholars program will not be impacted. We will happily respect whatever choice you decide. Please review the information on the University Housing/COVID-19 website and follow their explicit instructions for requesting a deferral by August 26, 2020.

Notes for incoming Cal Poly Scholars:
  • At Cal Poly, students request to live in a Residential Learning Community -- not a specific building. As a Cal Poly Scholar, you’ll automatically be placed in the Year 1 Scholars Community.
  • You can request a roommate who is not a Scholar! As long as you both request each other as roommates, they’ll join you in the Year 1 Scholars Community (even if they’ve requested another community). If they prefer to live in another community, they should email housing@calpoly.edu prior to June 15. In this case, you would still remain in the Year 1 Scholars Community.
  • Looking for a roommate? Consider joining a Facebook group with other incoming Cal Poly students!
  • If you are participating in the Education Opportunity Program (EOP), you are likely to be placed into the EOP Community, as space allows. All Year 2 Scholars, including those who are also participating in EOP, are expected to reside in the Year 2+ Scholars Community.
  • Limited exemptions are granted for the Cal Poly Scholars requirement to live on-campus for two years. To inquire about a possible exemption, please email cpscholars@calpoly.edu.

All dates are accurate but may be subject to change based on recommendations from Public Health related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

New Transfer Scholars (optional)

Incoming transfer students in the Cal Poly Scholars program are not required to live on campus.

The transfer housing application is closed, as all spaces are filled for Fall 2020. You can add your name to the waitlist in your Housing Portal.

Use your tech credit at the University Store

As a Cal Poly Scholar, an exciting part of your financial aid package is a one-time $900 technology credit at Cal Poly’s University Store.

  • Your tech credit is currently available for phone orders by calling the Cal Poly Bookstore directly at (805) 756-5322. It will be available for online checkout through the bookstore website as early as August 31, 2020
  • The credit is only applicable toward the purchase of a laptop, tablet, or desktop computer sold through Cal Poly's University Store. Warranty packages and cases for the purchased devices may also be purchased with the tech credit.
  • If you already know the device you are interested in, we highly recommend that you contact Cal Poly's University Store directly at cpstoretech@calpoly.edu to ensure it will be in stock and ready for a timely shipment or pick-up.
  • If you have questions about the tech credit available to incoming Scholars, please email cpscholars@calpoly.edu.
  • Your tech credit will expire on the last day of spring quarter 2021.
